If you believe your energy meter may be faulty or misrecording your energy usage it’s a good idea to run a Burns Test on the problem meter. A burns test is where you take meter readings every day for 7 days. You then calculate the energy use between each day and compare these to each other. If your usage is within about 10Kwh for electricity or 10 units for gas then your meters are recording your usage correctly. If you see any unexplainable spikes in energy usage over these days then contact your energy provider and provide them with these readings. Bare in mind, that if you have solar panels or a turbine that produces electricity but don’t have a smart meter your electricity readings can decrease on sunny or windy days as your not smart meter will not have a dedicated reading for energy that you have generated.
