Where’s The ATEM 4M/E Constellation 4K?
Just before NAB Blackmagic let us know about some new products they are releasing and boy was I excited. I’m only going to dive into 2 of these today though, The Constellation HD and the Cloud Store. I’m kind of disappointed by one and Would love the other with a little tweak made to it.
The Cloud Store
A few weeks ago Blackmagic Introduced the Cloud Store. A high-performance Network Storage device that has 4 10G ethernet ports some fancy HDMI monitoring, DropBox Sync and more. And I wanted it almost immediately until that is they let us know the price and that you couldn’t get an empty one and add your own M.2 SSDs.
There are three models available the Cloud Pod which allows you to convert any USB-C disk to cloud storage, The Cloud Store Mini with 8TB of M.2 SSD Storage and the Cloud Store with 20TB, 80TB or 320TB or M.2 SSD storage.
In my opinion, there are 2 options missing, the Cloud Store & the Cloud Store Mini Bring Your Own Drives option. Yeah I know we have the option of the Cloud Pod but if I’m recording a show with 6 cameras I don’t want the bottleneck to be the USB port on the device. It would also make archiving simpler too. Rather than having to buy more and more Cloud Pods customers can just swap out SSDs.
The ATEM 4M/E Constellation HD
When I saw that Black magic was releasing a new Constellation Switch I was ecstatic, that is until I realised they were only releasing an HD Model. If you saw any of my Blog posts before the meltdown you’ll know that I’ have been trying to find a way to get Dante Audio into ATEM switchers with as little hassle as possible and the top end ATEM 4M/E Constellation 8K switcher had a solution via its MADI inputs. You can use any number of devices to convert DANTE to MADI with no trouble at all.
The only problem being is that the ATEM 4M/E Constellation 8K has a sticker price of £8382.80 on the CVP Website. As you can imagine this is a bit much just to have one feature. Don’t get me wrong having an extra 3 mix effects is amazing as well as having super source, standards conversion and a ton of other features but just shy of 10 grand is still a lot of money especially when I don’t need to switch 8K content.
So when I saw Blackmagic release the HD version I sat with bated breath and it’s a good thing I didn’t hold it for too long and the 4K version didn’t arrive. I’m also a bit gutter that Blackmagic hasn’t added ISO Recording to anything but the ATEM Mini Lineup. I know you can do this with the Hyperdeck and looping out but it would be so nice to be able to have all my sources synced up when going to do the master edit as that alone would probably save me an hour or two
Overall it’s a great upgrade over the ATEM HD switchers Blackmagic previously offered but I think that a fair few folks are going to feel like they have been left behind.
