Ubiquiti UNAS Pro: A Game-Changer for Home and Business Storage

Now if only they would bring back the Application Server

Ubiquiti’s latest release, the UNAS Pro, is a serious upgrade to their network storage game. This powerful NAS device is perfect for anyone who needs reliable, high-performance storage, whether you’re a Pro Home user or a small business owner.

The UNAS Pro is a powerhouse of features. Its powerful processor ensures lightning-fast data transfers and smooth multitasking. The flexible storage options allow you to tailor the device to your specific needs, whether you need a large capacity drive for media storage or multiple smaller drives for redundancy. Built with durability in mind, the UNAS Pro is designed to withstand the test of time. And with its seamless integration with other Ubiquiti devices, you can effortlessly manage and monitor your network storage.

The UNAS Pro offers a multitude of benefits for both home and business users. For home users, it can serve as a central hub for your digital media library, ensuring easy access to your movies, music, and photos. It also provides a reliable backup solution for your important files, safeguarding them from accidental loss or hardware failure. Additionally, it can be used to store and access security camera footage, enhancing your home security system.

For small businesses, the UNAS Pro can revolutionize file storage and management. It can serve as a centralized file server, making it easy for your team to access and collaborate on documents. The device also provides a robust backup solution, protecting your business-critical data from potential disasters. Furthermore, its virtualization capabilities allow you to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical server, optimizing resource utilization and increasing efficiency.

The Future: A Revived Ubiquiti Application Server

Imagine a world where your UNAS Pro works seamlessly with a powerful application server. This dream could become a reality with a revived Ubiquiti Application Server. Unfortunately Ubiquiti discontinued their Previous Application Server years ago and I think it was a massive mistake.

A modern application server could offer a wide range of capabilities. With virtualization, it would be possible to run multiple operating systems on a single physical server, increasing efficiency and resource utilization. Containerization would enable the deployment and management of applications in isolated environments, improving security and scalability. Additionally, it could host essential network services like DNS, DHCP, and VPN, streamlining network management. Finally, the application server could serve as a valuable platform for developers to build, test, and deploy applications.

The Perfect Pair

The UNAS Pro and a revived application server would be the ultimate power duo. The UNAS Pro could serve as a shared storage repository for virtual machines and containerized applications hosted on the application server. You could move the Ubiquiti Cloud key on her and as it would have a bit more grunt, it could take over the camera monitoring features. If they were to make it powerful enough you could even use it to host your own local AI so you don’t have to rely on Co-Pilot (Chat GPT), Gemini or anyone of the hundred or more other AI hosted by other companies for their benefit and not yours.

Conclusion

The UNAS Pro is a game-changer for network storage. With its powerful features and seamless integration, it’s a must-have for home and business users alike. And with the potential of a revived application server, Ubiquiti could create a truly comprehensive IT solution.

For those of you that are interested, I’ve created a small shopping list that covers most needs of home users it includes the NAS, a Gateway max, a few PoE switches, 4 Wireless Access Points (as well as a stand for two of them), 3 External Camera, 4 IP Phones and a Doorbell PoE Kit. This would give any Small to Medium size home fantastic wireless coverage (even if it’s only on Wifi 5 Speeds, though I hope they update the Swiss Army Knife to wifi 6 or 7 soon), a Phone system & Smart door bell all managed in one platform.
