The potential of the Apple TV

Could it become a Gaming Machine?

We got our Apple TV not long after the 4th Generation device was released in October 2015 and to be honest except for a couple of apps such as Spotify and All 4 it had everything we needed (both have now released apps, though they took their sweet time).

In my opinion, it is one of the better smart boxes as it design is simple and easy to use, it links seamlessly with my other Apple devices allowing me to input usernames and passwords from my phone, for example, it’s plenty powerful and could quite easily play any mobile game that is controller compatible.

The thing that bugs me though is that even though the Apple TV is capable of playing some of the amazing games on the App Store, the publisher hasn’t released their games for Apple TV. It wouldn’t be all that difficult for them either, map commands to buttons on an MFi controller and click a button that enables publishing to the Apple TV’s Apps Store. Apple did shoot themselves in the foot back at its launch when they said all of the games have to be able to use the Siri remote. A colossal mistake that has thankfully fixed, though it is a case of too little too late as many game publishers have been put off and will need some convincing.

I mentioned it earlier, but Apple has put a decent amount of power in this small box. The Apple TV 4K as an A10X Processor that includes a 6 core CPU and a twelve core GPU. It’s straight out of the 2017 iPad Pro so you know it will be able to cope with even than the iPhone that most people use to play their mobile games on (well if you have an iPhone).

I’m not expecting to see AAA games on Apple TV any time soon, just as we don’t see them on iPhones and iPads. It would be amazing to see games like Fortnite, Call of Duty Mobile, Max Payne Mobile or GTA Liberty City Stories on the Apple TV sometime soon even if they aren’t the full versions of the AAA games. But now that Apple has become serious about gaming, with the launch of their subscription gaming service, I would love them to release a competing gaming console or a really pimped out Apple TV. With the rumours of Apple releasing ARM-based Laptop soon and possibly ARM-based computers in the not so distant future I can’t see it being too much of a hassle for Apple to create a top-notch gaming console based on the ARM architecture that matches the performance of a Play Station or Xbox.

Most of all though what I really want is Fortnite. It may sound stupid but as it is currently our multiplayer game of choice. it would be nice not to be relegated to my iPad, and losing out on the big screen, or Laptop and having to download 10 times the amount to play the same game.

What do you think? Should Apple Release a console or Pimp out the Apple TV? Would you play AAA games on the Apple TV if you could? Let me know in the comments below.
