Isolation Day 9: YouTube Multicam Idea

So for a while now I’ve had this idea stuck in my head, but I have no idea how to go about getting it from my head and into production. It’s basically a true Multicam editor for YouTube.

Imagine your doing a live stream at an event and the client wants it stream to YouTube. You have to setup your switcher, your streaming PC, your Media Server and a whole bunch of other gear. What if you could hook your camera to a streaming device (such as the Teradek Vidiu Pro), you could even use mobile phones (in a cage and with a light and external battery mounted of course), stream direct to YouTube via it’s Camera Angle Feature.

Then click a button in the YouTube Interface and you have a Multi View with all of your camera feeds. You could also have the ability to upload Titles, Graphics or Videos to YouTube too so you can insert them via a media Player, though this would mean that YouTube would need to support video alpha channels if they don’t already.

All you’d have to do is click on the item you wanted on screen and away you go. What would be even better is if you could pair it with an X-Keys Programable Keyboard or a Streamdeck.

Not only would this be great for live outdoor events but it would also mean that all of your individual videos are already on YouTube ready for release. I could see this being great for smaller productions too such as churches, community groups or education settings that can’t afford a to create a full streaming setup.

I know it would have come in handy a few years back when I was part of a team producing videos for the Beverley Folk Festival. We could have live streamed every stage as well as the interviews that we got too.

This could probably be done with a few APIs and other bit and pieces that I have no clue how to utilise or there could even be something like this out there already, if you know of something then please let me know.

What do you think? Would something like this be possible? Would you use it? Let me know down in the comments.
